BRADLEY
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Bradley Field, as it was originally
known, was constructed by the Army Corp of Engineers during 1940 and
1941. In January 1942, Bradley Field was named after a young Air
Force Second Lieutenant, Eugene M. Bradley from Antlers, Oklahoma;
who was killed when his P-40 fighter plane crashed at this base on
August 21, 1941. In the spring of 1946, the State of
Connecticut took over Bradley Field. By April, 1957, all
major carriers were operating at Bradley. As of today,
over a dozen major carriers operate through Bradley International
Airport, generating over 5 million passengers a year.
BRADLEY INTERNATIONAL
AIRPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT
When the State of Connecticut took over Bradley Field in
the spring of 1946 it also started the process of building its first
Fire Department. In the spring of 1984, Bradley
Fire Department started its first Paramedic services by providing
advanced life support to the patrons of the airport and mutual aid
to Windsor Locks and surrounding towns. As of today,
Bradley International Airport Fire Department is looked upon by
other airport fire departments as a progressive department in the
A.A.F.F. (Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting) class. To learn more about
