Steve’s
career in State service began in 1977 at the UConn Health Center Police
Department as a Buildings & Grounds Patrol Officer.
He became a Police Officer in 1979 and was promoted to Sgt. in 1998. He
was awarded a “Distinguished Service” medal and commendation in 1995
for an incident which involved a mentally unstable individual with a
weapon. Steve retired from State service in June of 2000.
While
a member of PSEC, Steve was elected President of IUPA Local 74 in 1996 and
served in that capacity until his retirement, winning re-election twice.
During that time, Steve was a steward of General Jurisdiction, serving as
a member of the PSEC Executive Board. He was part of the committee for the
1997 ERIP and 20 year Health Care agreement as well as a member of
PSEC’s Bargaining Committee for the 1999 – 2004 contract negotiations.
As
the Union’s Member Representative, Steve works under the immediate
direction and supervision of the PSEC President. His duties entail
providing training to new stewards as well as continuing education to
established stewards, investigating contractual violations and submitting
grievances where applicable. Steve also fields inquiries from the
membership on contract interpretation issues and provides representation
at meetings and hearings. He has attended the AFL-CIO’s George Meany
Center for Labor Studies in Maryland on topics that enable him to better
serve the membership.
As
a lifetime member of Red Sox Nation, Steve has a keen sense of working on
the side of the underdog in attempting to rectify situations where people
were treated unfairly.
